J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Endowed Chair of Theology in the Public Square

Berkeley School of Theology (BST) invites applications for a full-time faculty position: up to 50% time as professor (rank open) of the J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Chair in Theology in the Public Square; and, up to 50% time as Director of BST’s inaugural Center for Truth, Racial Healing and Restorative Justice. 

The initial three-year appointment (possible tenure track) may begin as early as August 2022. Candidates must possess the Ph.D. in Theology and/or Ethics; must have a commitment to theological practice and education for church ministry and the public square within the Christian tradition; as well as the ability to teach effectively within a multi-cultural, broadly ecumenical and inter-faith context in the BA Equivalency, MDiv, MCL, MTS,  and DMin programs of the school and the MA and PhD programs of the Graduate Theological Union (of which BST is a founding member school). 

Candidates must show evidence of the ability to do inter-disciplinary and contextual work; knowledge of and experience in anti-racism and restorative justice scholarship and practice; skills in organizational leadership and fund-development; a theological orientation compatible with a progressive evangelical heritage; and promise of scholarly achievement and practice beneficial to the church, public and academic communities.
